GURGAON: A few years ago, Sohna Road, which was deserted, was a feared place. It still is but this time around it is because of the increasing number of speeding cars and the concomitant rise in the number of road accidents. The lack of foot overbridges and subways is seen as the root cause of the accidents.
On the both sides of the road there are several residential towers and the residents from these towers have to cross the road endangering their lives for crossing over to the other side of the road.
"Going by the increasing number of accidents on Sohna Road, it is time for construction of more foot overbridges and subways on several stretches of the road. Planners here give importance to the smooth passage of the vehicles while endangering the lives of pedestrians. If FOBs are constructed people would love to visit the shopping malls on foot instead of in cars," said V P Sajeevan, general secretary, RWA Central Park 2 Condominium.
Since all the leading brands have made their presence felt in the malls of Sohna Road, shoppers feel that it is high time authorities constructed FOBs. "To enter the malls residents living across the road have to come in their cars from Subhash Chowk and Badshapur side to take a U-turn. It leads to a lot of traffic jams on the road. Besides, these malls do not have sufficient parking space. Customers are found parking their cars by the roadside leading to more traffic chaos on the road. FOBs would enable them to enter the malls with ease," said Pravin Sehgal, CEO of ILD Mall and a resident of Sohna Road.
Navin Raheja, the chairman and managing director of Raheja Developers, which owns Raheja Mall on Sohna Road, said " The road needs not only FOBs but also lots of other facilities like footpath, bus queue shelter stops and greenery in abundance." When contacted, HUDA administrator
Praveen Kumar said, "We do not have any immediate plan but considering the growing number of vehicles, we will think of constructing FOBs rather than subways."
